Work Diary

During this session we were tasked to photograph in Mapplethorpes style whilst on location, at first I found this very difficult because I was unsure what Mapplethorpes style was however after looking through some of his images and making an image bank I found that I understood how he liked to photograph people. When we went out to photograph we were in small groups and this made it easy for us to complete this task as there was a few people I could use within my images. Towards the beginning I was struggling to focus on the face of the person so the background was blurred however after a few attempts we realised that the model must be standing away from the background and this would let the camera focus easier on the face of the model. I liked photographing in this style and found that I was able to produce quite a few images in Mapplethorpe’s style.
This is one of my Location Mapplethorpe images, I like this because I have captured similar emotions to what Mapplethorpe tends to photograph and the composition is also different to other images that I took. To improve this image I could have taken the photo against a different background as the lines are not straight however if i straighten them then George would not be straight.
This is another of my location Mapplethorpe images, I like this image because in my opinion, this background is much more suitable as it it simple however I do not like this image very much as Josh is not looking towards the camera and I prefer Mapplethorpe's images where the model is looking directly at the camera. I could have also taken this image slightly closer to Josh as I feel that I took this image too far away and included more of his body.

Progress

If I was to go out and photograph Mapplethorpe’s style images on location again I would focus on the backgrounds a little more as I felt my backgrounds made it slightly difficult for me to edit as quite often I used a background with lines and sometimes these were not straight however if I straightened them, the model would then be slanted. Therefore if I was to repeat this lesson I would try and find some plainer background to photograph against as I felt the pink and orange backgrounds were very effective.

Work Diary

During this lesson we photographed location contrast again. This was slightly easier than the first time we went out to photograph location contrast as it meant that we had a basic understanding of what would count as location contrast. Therefore during this session I was able to take a lot of different images. I also felt that these images were slightly better than my first attempt at location contrast as the sun was out and images always look much better when the sun is out.
This is one of my second location contrast shoot images, I like this image because there is the contrast in the colour and also the contrast in materials. I like this image because it is very close up and the whole composition is full. In this image you can see the contrast between the green or the moss and the grey of the bricks and there is also a deeper contrast between the natural element and the man made element.
This is another of my location contrast 2 images, I like this image because there is the contrast between the metal and the stones on the ground. To improve this image I could have cropped it a little better so that the small area in the bottom right is no longer in the image. I also like this image because I think the colourings goes very well together due to the different shades of stones and then the chrome colour of the metal.

Progress

If I was to go out and photograph location contrast a third time I think I would try and find some new areas to photograph rather than just staying in the college grounds. I think if we went outside of college we may be able to find a variety of different types of images as I felt mine were all very similar to the first time we photographed location contrast. I also think it would be a good idea to photograph things a few times because some of my photographs were quite blurry.

Work Diary

Monday 10th November
During this lesson we were photographing location contrast. At first I was unsure of what to photograph but once I understood this task was much easier. I found that there was quite a bit of location contrast around college and I feel that I have a variety of different location contrast images. I used all of the time available to photograph this topic as I felt there was such a range of things to show contrast.

This is one of my location contrast images, I like this image because I think it is very obvious that is it showing contrast as the two halves of the image are showing different textured materials however they are a similar colour which emphasises the contrast of the textures. To improve this image I should have included more of the top material so the split was more central. I think I could have also tried photographing this image from a few different angles because it may have looked slightly better from a different angle.

This is another of my location contrast images. I like this image because not only is there the contrast between the colours of the two objects but there is also the contrast between the patterns within them for example the left of the image is bricks and they are a variety of colours whereas the right is a lined patterned surface in black and white. I also like this because I think I have centred the contrast very well and think this looks very effective.

Progress
If I was to go out and photograph location contrast again I would try and find some different areas as there may have been other, more interesting examples of contrast in other areas such as in town or around the areas of college. I also quite liked the images where I contrasted with clothing such as the leather sleeves and the different coloured shoes so I think it would be good to try and photograph more images like this.
